Michele Y. Tapia-Browning Personal Artist Statement
Michele Y. Tapia-Browning - Personal Statement Michele Tapia-Browning states: “To me, as a contemporary Pueblo woman artist, Pueblo imagery is so meaningful and powerful that it can no longer be limited to only traditional forms. Today Indian artists have many skills, techniques, media and other forms of communication at their disposal which can be used to maintain, to preserve, to share thoughts and ideas with other Native and non-native people as well. The imagery that I use in my digital art is readable and understood on a variety of levels by varying viewers. It is important to me that I have this medium which enables me to express myself and my feelings about who I am as a Pueblo woman artist in this world, moreover because this technique enables me to share my art and feelings on a world-wide scale via the internet or in print. I create with contemporary tools and methods but never without an awareness of and respect for the Pueblo world in which I reside and am an integral part.” Based on her steadfast use of time-honored tradition, Michele has participated in and received recognition from many prestigious art shows, gallery representations, permanent collections, traveling exhibitions, and publications throughout the United States.
